It can be heavy emotionally. Logistically, it is not easy. And financially, it can feel like you're being pulled in two directions.
The situation is becoming increasingly frequent, and although there is no easy formula, we have identified what works, what helps, and what brings people peace of mind.
[JENNA – Middle]
Establish clarity at the outset.
Ensure that you are aware of your own plan — your cash flow, retirement trajectory, as well as your financial boundaries. You cannot offer solid support if you do not have a firm foundation.
Discuss the complex issues early on.
Your parents should be consulted regarding their wishes, plans, and documents. It may feel uncomfortable at first, but it will prevent confusion later on. It also shows them that you care enough about them to take the time to ask.
Consider all of your options.
There are many ways to protect yourself without compromising your values, from long-term care insurance to coordinating your life with other family members and professionals.
You don't have to choose between your future and your parents'. You have to create a strategy that honors both of them.
